Just want to give an update, in my case, Netgear newest firmware R7000-V1.0.3.60_1.1.27 was just junk compared to DD-WRT kongac 24710. slower transfer rate(11MBps/15MBps) using the same laptop combo mentioned in the original post, worst range, not to mention DD-WRT features which just straight out way better than the stock firmware.
I even tried downloading Netgear's official firmware (1.0.9.64_10.2.64, so I could still install DD-WRT), and that failed too. Every time that I've tried to upgrade it or set certain settings (like the SSID and password), it will act as if it's working for 2 seconds or so, and then my browser says "Connection Reset".
